The Gangster is the 2nd book of the Magic & Steam series, and I've been enjoying them a lot more than I imagined I would. This is an alternate reality based on Steampunk principles. Everything is powered by steam and magic, with complex gears and mechanisms, and the power of steam and magic, allowing alternative versions of modern technology.Gillian Hamilton is the senior New York agent at the Federal Bureau of Magic and Steam. He met Constantine, a vigilante outlaw (Gunner the Deadly), in the last book, and the sparks flew. Constantine is visiting him in New York when a new criminal mastermind is making his presence known. As body count increases, they soon realize that the stakes are a lot higher than previously imagined, and Gillian and the Bureau need the help of Constantine to save the city.The world, technology, and magic are richly defined. Even though it's the late 1800s, the advancement of magic and steam power allow large airships, elevators, communication devices, fancy steam-powered automobiles, and many other modern-day conveniences. Elemental magic is harnessed by a few people falling into certain categories. Gillian is a caster and is able to directly draw on the magic and spells woven into the atmosphere by others. It's incredibly interesting and C.S. Poe does a wonderful job of bringing this world to life.Along with the world, the characters are very well developed. Even secondary characters are richly written, have distinct personalities, and all complement each other very well. I love reading the interplay between Gillian, Constantine, Gillian's boss Loren, and even an obnoxious informant named Addison.I strongly recommend first reading the first novella, The Engineer. This is where the two main protagonists are introduced and meet. While you don't need to read that to enjoy this, it does give a bit of backstory. Regardless, this is an engrossing and rewarding book filled with wonderment! 5 stars, all the way.This book blew me away! I quit reading steampunk a long time ago, but Gillian and Gunner have me addicted again.Honestly, I’m not sure what I loved more - the mystery, the action, the love story? I couldn’t put the book down but read as slowly as I could (voice-over: reader, it wasn’t that slow) just to savor every last bit of it.In the beginning of the series, Gillian and Gunner were the lawman and the outlaw, with hints of more complexity. This second book, however, really delves into secrets and backstories as the two men continue to explore their connection and, for Gillian especially, come to terms with what that means in the black-and-white world they live in.But wait, there’s more! Another lunatic is on the attack, this time in 1880s New York, and Gillian and Gunner are working against the clock to figure out who and what is trying to take Gillian down. So yeah, epiphanies and deep conversations, conspiracies and explosions, gunfights with magic.The book has everything. Just everything. I am anxiously awaiting book 3. Heads-up - there is a bit of a cliffhanger regarding an ongoing question in the book, but for all intents and purposes, this is a stand-alone. Think dime-store novels at their finest.I received a free copy of this book. This is my honest and unbiased review.
